They then went to their Sunday school teacher to ask him to start the troop. Early activities included a week’s camp in Blackpool for 45p, being cycle messengers in both world wars between Ashton Town Hall and the Barracks on Mossley Road, and holding a garden party with special guest Frankie Howard, who was made an honorary member of the Group.
Long service awards were presented to Susan Frankish, 30 years, Sam Burgess, 15 years, Michael Symes and Amanda Kinsey, 10 years, Andrew M’Claren, Maureen Longley and Richard Curtis, 5 years. Wood Beads were presented to Richard Willis. Finally, Explorer Belts were presented to Jack Bailey and Christopher Hall.
During his address, Rev. Inglis stressed the importance of the role of leaders to help the young people in their care take a full and active part in their local, national and international communities by teaching them the skills of life.
After all sections had renewed their Promises, District Commissioner, Andy Morton, thanked all who attended and took a full part in the service.
